Sovereignty ran by Journalism in the stretch of the Belmont Stakes to win by three lengths, double the distance he beat him in the Kentucky Derby.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sovereignty took control of the 3-year-old division with his authoritative victory in the Belmont Stakes last Saturday at Saratoga and it’s fair to wonder which horses and how many will be game to take him on during the summer stakes at Saratoga.

The top three finishers from the Kentucky Derby finished in the same order in the Belmont. In the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty beat Journalism by 1 1/2 lengths with Baeza a neck back in third. In the Belmont, Sovereignty defeated Journalism by three lengths with Baeza finishing 6 1/2 lengths behind Sovereignty.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Nitrogen, the 17-length winner of Saturday’s off-the-turf Wonder Again Stakes, will return to the turf for her next start but trainer Mark Casse said she could be candidate for the Grade 1 Alabama back on dirt on Aug. 16.

Nitrogen won her fifth straight race when she galloped in the slop in the Wonder Again, a race that was scheduled for the turf but was moved to the dirt after 2.24 inches of rain fell in the Saratoga area over a 24-hour period, prompting track officials to cancel turf racing on Saturday.

Late shakeup of Belmont Day card not all bad

Barbara D. Livingston
Handle on the Belmont Stakes this year was $55.46 million, an 8.94 percent decline compared to last year’s total of $60.91 million.

Just before noon on Saturday, the New York Racing Association announced that its two Grade 1 grass races on the 14-race Belmont Stakes card would be moved to Sunday, while all of the remaining grass races on the card would be moved to the dirt.

With that, a blockbuster card appeared to be headed for a big-time bust.

The 38-year-old veteran suffered a slightly fractured scapula when his mount, the Bill Mott-trained Term, fell after suffering a heart attack less than a quarter-mile into a maiden race on the turf at Gulfstream Park.

Fierceness climbing the ranks of Pletcher's all-time best horses

Barbara D. Livingston
Fierceness has shed his early career inconsistency and become a leading older male.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Todd Pletcher has a number of candidates from which to choose when he’s asked to name the best horse he’s ever trained. After running through a bushel of potential nominees, the Hall of Fame trainer settled on Left Bank.

“He ran seven-eighths in 1:20 in the Tom Fool and came back and set a track record in the Whitney,” said Pletcher, referring to Left Bank’s 1:47.04 clocking in the 2002 Whitney, a mark that was lowered five years later by the Pletcher-trained Lawyer Ron, who ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.64, a record that still stands.
