CFP National Championship: Georgia vs. Alabama Betting Preview
Three things you should know before betting on Georgia-Alabama:
1. Nick Saban took over as Alabama’s head coach after the Crimson Tide had gone 6-7 in 2006, Mike Shula’s fourth and final season at the helm. Alabama was an underdog four times in Saban’s first season, going 1-3 straight-up and 1-2-1 against the spread when getting points in 2007. Since the start of 2008, the Crimson Tide are 5-1 both straight-up and against the spread as an underdog.
2. Half of the six games Alabama has played as an underdog since the start of 2008 have been against Georgia: The Crimson Tide are 3-0 both straight-up and against the spread when getting points from the Bulldogs in that span. All three of Alabama’s upset victories of Georgia under Saban have been by double digits and by an average margin of 18.7 points per game: The Tide beat the Bulldogs 41-30 as a 6-point road underdog in 2008, 38-10 as a 1.5-point road underdog in 2015 and 41-24 as a 6-point underdog in last month’s SEC Championship Game. Alabama is 7-0 straight-up against Georgia since the start of the 2008 season, winning the seven games by an average margin of 12.4 points over the seven games.
3. Nine of the past 10 games between Georgia and Alabama have gone Over the total, with an average of 58.2 points scored over the 10 games. A total of 63 or more points have been scored in each of the past three meetings: the 2018 SEC Championship Game, a regular-season matchup at Alabama in 2020 and last month’s SEC Championship Game. The Over is 10-4-1 in the 15 January games Alabama has played under Saban.
