ARCADIA, Calif. – The show is not over yet. There is a rainbow to chase on closing day at Santa Anita. The fall meet ends Sunday with a mandatory payout in the jackpot pick six to spice up an otherwise modest card. The 20-cent pick-six wager, which was not offered Breeders’ Cup Friday or Saturday, begins Sunday with $436,837 already in the pool. How much new money? A conservative estimate, based on carryover divided by takeout rate formula, is bettors will wager more than $2 million. The entire net pool Sunday, plus carryover, goes to tickets with the most winners. No consolation payout. The sequence includes two potential singles – a 2-year-old maiden in race 6, and a reliable turf filly in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes, race 8. Below is a look. Race 4 Throughout fall, speed has been dynamite at six furlongs – pacesetters won 15 of the 26 races (through Thursday). The profile is one reason front-runner Oil Can Knight is the top contender in this $20,000 claiming sprint for 3-year-olds. He also is the best horse. Oil Can Knight won a starter allowance in July, earning an 87 Beyer that would blow away this field. But he disappeared for two months afterward, finished 11th after breaking slowly in his comeback, and now drops in class. Though his condition is dubious, Oil Can Knight is the one to beat. Verynsky finished a respectable second last out in a similar age-restricted claiming sprint, while Toothless Wonder is back where he fits. Mo Dinero could win if he reproduces his most recent start, although a three-week gap in works is reason to wonder if he can maintain form. Bottom line: Oil Can Knight and Verysnky are solid. Secondary contenders include Toothless Wonder and Mo Dinero. The other two, Owning and Concord Jet, merit deep backup status only. Race 5 Buckstopper Kit has never raced this far, 1 1/4 miles on turf. He has run well repeatedly at 1 1/8 miles, including a last-out win in a restricted $32,000 claiming race. The horse he beat returned to win. The pedigree of Buckstopper Kit suggests the distance is okay; he is the one to beat in this entry-level allowance/optional $40,000 claiming race. Crystal Tribe enters as a definite contender in his second U.S. start. His local debut was a respectable fifth in a race that produced three next-out winners. A 3-year-old facing older on Sunday, Crystal Tribe won at 1 1/4 miles in England and should improve second time out. The veteran 7-year-old Unapologetic has run races that put him in the hunt. Bottom line: can a pick-six bettor stay alive using just four of nine? Buckstopper Kit and Crystal Tribe are main-ticket necessities; Unapologetic and in-form Chosen Vessel figure on backup tickets. Race 6 Tizamagican will be among the most heavily favored runners Sunday, based on a solid runner-up finish last out in a similar maiden mile for 2–year-olds. Tizamagician finished more than 10 lengths clear of third, earned an 82 Beyer and should be tough to beat. An upset candidate is second-start maiden Taishan, who worked well for the second start of his career and first since mid-August, when he finished fifth in a sprint. Taishan is sired by Twirling Candy, and might want turf, but recent works are solid. Best Chance could be better than his first two starts on turf suggest. He has an upset chance first-time dirt. Bottom line: Tizamagician will be formidable as a potential single, Taishan and Best Chance are backup ticket contenders. Race 7 The principals in this sorry field of $20,000 maiden-claiming fillies are last-out runners-up Morning Cynn and Info’s Treasure. First-time starter Tinzel Town Queen is a sibling to a pair of multiple winners. Bottom line: Maiden-20s typically run to form. Morning Cynn, Info’s Treasure and new shooter Tinzel Town Queen should get the job done. Race 8 Toinette is 6 for 6 on turf at 1 1/6 miles or less. She is favored to win the Goldikova Stakes at one mile. Favorites won the last five editions of this stakes race. To win, Toinette must catch likely pacesetter Ms Bad Behavior. European invader Richmond Avenue makes her U.S. debut as a live longshot. Bottom line: Toinette will be tough at low odds; Ms Bad Behavior and Richmond Avenue are backup ticket contenders. Race 9 Class-drop front-runners Bully for Eric and Hoss Cartwright show up at rock bottom for the first time. It is a $12,500 claiming sprint, non-winners of two lifetime, at the speed-friendly distance of six furlongs. If the top pair duel, last-out maiden-claiming winner Temple Knights has an off-the-pace upset chance. Bottom line: Three deep, with Bully for Eric, Hoss Cartwright, and Temple Knights. First post Sunday is 11:30 a.m. Post time for race 4, the first leg of the pick six, is 1 p.m.
