SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Letruska put her abundant speed to good use Sunday at Saratoga, running eight other fillies and mares off their feet for 1 1/8 miles to register a wire-to-wire, one-length victory over Royal Flag in the Grade 3 Shuvee. With Joel Rosario aboard for the first time, Letruska broke a tad slow but quickly sprinted clear, set the pace under clever rating, remained well off the rail while settling into the stretch with a comfortable advantage before holding safe a belated try from Royal Flag. The latter raced mid-pack for six furlongs, finished best of all along the inside and was gradually getting to the winner at the end. Our Super Freak prompted the winner’s pace, holding gamely to finish another three quarters of a length farther back in third. Nonna Madeline, bet down at the end to a tepid 5-2 favorite despite having chased Letruska to no avail on two previous occasions, raced wide and was never a serious factor. :: DRF's Saratoga headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more Letruska, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Super Saver, began her career with six consecutive victories in Mexico before coming to the U.S. to beat older horses in the Clasico Invitational del Caribe last December at Gulfstream Park. She entered the Shuvee off a fifth-place effort in the seven-furlong, Grade 1 Ballerina here earlier in the session. Letruska is a homebred owned by St. Georges Stables LLC and trained by Fauso Guttierez. She covered a mile and one furlong over the fast track in 1:48.94 and paid $9.30 for her first graded stakes win in this country. “She didn’t get the best jump at the start, the first jump was a little bit slow, and she went very fast early, :23 and :46, but at the end she had horse,” said Guttierez, who kept a stable in south Florida that included Letruska for the first time in 2020. “Finally, I think she’s shown to be a filly that combines speed and distance. Even in Mexico, she didn’t have the big competition, but she made very good times. Before the Ballerina, she was very, very nervous in the paddock and it was a big jump up for her at seven furlongs. Today she was perfect (in the paddock) and this was the race I think she can run (best), because I don’t know how many fillies can go with her at this distance in :46. Two turns is perfect for her.” Guttierez said he’d consider the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 4 for Letruska’s next outing.
