Independence Hall was a lopsided winner of the Grade 3, $150,000 Nashua on Sunday at Aqueduct, drawing out to a 12 1 /4-length win over Meru. It was another length back to Chase Tracker in third. The Nashua, for 2-year-olds, was the richest of three stakes on the card. Independence Hall ($21.20) came into the race off a debut win in a maiden special weight at seven furlongs at Parx. He was always prominent Sunday, racing alongside leader Spycraft through fractions of 22.68 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.55 for the half-mile. Independence Hall took over through six furlongs in 1:10.24 and separated himself from the field through the stretch, while covering the one-turn mile on a fast track in 1:34.66. Jose Ortiz, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday, was aboard Independence Hall for trainer Michael Trombetta. He was riding the horse for the first time in the Nashua. “Very impressive,” Ortiz told the New York Racing Association press office. “He looked very good first time out. I was there at Parx when he broke his maiden. I was very excited about riding him today. “Mike told me the first time out that the only thing he didn't do well was break. Today, he broke really clean and I had to go ahead with him. When I went to the crop at the quarter pole I knew the race was done. I don't think any other 2-year-old out there can kick like him. He seems special.” Independence Hall was the third next-out winner to emerge from the Sept. 21 maiden race at Parx. Ny Traffic, who was third, came back to take a maiden special weight at Parx with a Beyer Figure of 84 and Vanzy, who was fifth, won another maiden special weight at Parx with a Beyer of 67. Independence Hall is a son of Constitution and a half-brother to Black Onyx, a Grade 3 winner who earned $418,860. Independence Hall races for the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks Racing Stables, and Kathleen and Robert Verratti. For the win, Independence Hall earned $82,500. Speaktomeofsummer upsets Chelsey Flower Speaktomeofsummer pulled a 17-1 upset in the $100,000 Chelsey Flower, when she angled out in the stretch and quickened for a two-length win over English Breeze. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Quality Heat in third. The one-mile turf race for 2-year-old fillies, as well as the $125,000 Zagora later on the card, were both rescheduled for Sunday at Aqueduct after being on the canceled closing-day card last weekend at Belmont Park. Speaktomeofsummer ($36) had one horse beat in the early stages of the Chelsey Flower, as Quality Heat set a pressured pace, taking the field through six furlongs in 1:14.42. In the stretch, jockey Junior Alvarado guided Speaktomeofsummer off the rail and the pair went on to cover the distance on good ground in 1:38.87. “I was thinking we were going to sit third or fourth and she broke good, but then they ran away from us the first part of the race,” Alvarado told publicity at Aqueduct. “I saved ground and all the way down the backside, I had a good feeling, but I thought we were too far back. It's not where I wanted to be, but at the half-mile pole she took the bridle very nicely and I just tried to keep saving ground. She carried me the whole way. I just had to drive her through traffic, but I had a lot of horse. When I asked her at the end, she had a big turn of foot.” Christophe Clement trains Speaktomeofsummer for Waterford Stable. The filly has now won 2 of 3 starts and has compiled earnings of $84,000. She is a daughter of the War Front stallion Summer Front. Her dam, Silver Reunion, was a Grade 3 winner who ran out $254,403. Empressof the Nile up late in Zagora Empressof the Nile forged past the leaders in the late stages for a half-length win over Homeland Security in the Zagora. It was another neck back to Lemon Zip in third. The race was for fillies and mares over 1 1/2 miles on turf. Empressof the Nile ($10.20) settled off the pace set by Lady Montdore, who took the field through fractions of 25.12 seconds for the opening quarter, 51.45 for the first half-mile, 1:17.65 for six furlongs, and 1:43.58 for the mile. Empressof the Nile advanced and fought on through the stretch to cover the distance on good ground in 2:33.43. "I got a perfect trip,” winning rider Irad Ortiz Jr. told publicity. “I can't complain. I saved ground the whole way around and it worked out perfect." The win was one of two on the card for Ortiz, who won four Breeders’ Cup races between Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita. Graham Motion, who had a Breeders’ Cup winner Friday, trains Empressof the Nile. Rob Masiello co-owns Empressof the Nile with Madaket Stables and Manganaro Bloodstock.   “We weren't initially in this race, but then it canceled, so we talked about entering,” Masiello told publicity. “She had never run particularly well at Belmont, so we thought to toss that out while getting the extra week, and we entered here at Aqueduct and everything worked out.” Masiello said next-race plans will be determined by Motion, among the options the Grade 3, $400,000 Long Island on Nov. 30 at Aqueduct. Empressof the Nile was winning the first stakes race of her career in the Zagora. She has now won 4 of 19 starts and earned $331,112. Empressof the Nile is a daughter of Pioneerof the Nile.
