Hollendorfer 3-year-olds might be headed to Saratoga

DEL MAR, Calif. – Super Majesty, the unbeaten 3-year-old filly, and Kentuckian, who disappointed in his two-turn debut in the Los Alamitos Derby, both worked Wednesday at Del Mar for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who said he was considering sending both to Saratoga for, respectively, the Test and the King’s Bishop.
Super Majesty, with Alex Solis aboard, went a half-mile in 50 seconds. Kentuckian, with Mike Smith up, went a half-mile in 48 seconds. They worked alone, about an hour apart.
The 3-year-old program here is not friendly to 3-year-olds on dirt. To race for significant prize money, horses in that division must face elders or switch to turf.
In the case of Super Majesty, if she faces elders, she could remain sprinting and go in the Rancho Bernardo on Aug. 16, but that is a Grade 3 that is worth just $100,000. Her other Del Mar option is to stretch out around two turns in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes on Aug. 1. That’s a Grade 1, $300,000 race, but it’s also where two-time champion Beholder is headed.
Or, to run for big money in a graded stakes against 3-year-old fillies, she could move to turf for the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 15.
So, the seven-furlong Test on Aug. 8 becomes far more appealing. It is a Grade 1, $500,000 race restricted to 3-year-old fillies and keeps Super Majesty around one turn.
The Grade 1, $500,000 King’s Bishop on Aug. 29 would return Kentuckian to a one-turn race. In his race prior to the Los Alamitos Derby, he won the Laz Barrera, like the King’s Bishop a seven-furlong race.
