The 2022 edition of the Battle of Waterloo for Ontario-sired rookie pacing colts and geldings at Grand River Raceway was once again the Doug and Gregg McNair Show, as their Sounds Good won the C$204,000 Winbak Farm-presented event in 1:55 1/5. This was the McNairs fifth victory together in the race, giving Doug the most driving victories in the history of the Battle of Waterloo, and bringing Gregg to within one of Carl Jamieson's record total of six on the training side. Sounds Good, who won one of the eliminations last week, went to the lead from post two, but was pressured through fractions of 27 2/5, 57 2/5, and 1:27 2/5 by a parked Santana Hanover (Austin Sorrie). Behind Santana Hanover and also never seeing the pylons was a second McNair trainee The Moment Arose (Sylvain Filion), and Coop A Loop (Ed Hensley) was third-over and also on the outside the entire way. Despite being harrassed by Santana Hanover, the 1:00 middle-half gave Sounds Good enough in the tank to get the job done, as he prevailed by a length. Santana Hanover overcame the rough journey and was a game second, with Bettor Bea Treasure (Jody Jamieson) third from the pocket. Moment Is Here (Trevor Henry) rallied from last at the half to fourth at the finish, and Coop A Loop grabbed fifth. "There was a bit of a panic mode halfway around the first turn. I just didn't know where everyone was going to get situated. I wanted to do the give and go with Austin, but I noticed there was a horse on his back," said Doug McNair. " Kudos to him for just kind of coasting and riding and finishing second. In a race like that, it's tough to sit along out there nice and patient. To get one to finish second was a good job by him. "Heading into the last turn I thought everybody was exactly where we kind of wanted them with the way the race shaped out. At the head of the stretch, I just hoped when I pulled the plugs that he didn't let go of me because Austin's horse was still right there. He gave me a bit of a scare. Halfway down the lane our guy got the better of him. He raced great, both the horses raced great." ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Michael and Sam Sergi own Sounds Good, a Bettor's Delight-Southwind Silence gelding bred by Fred Hertrich III. Sounds Good has a record of 2-0-1 from four starts, has now put away C$121,656. He paid $5.20 to win as the second choice behind The Moment Arose, who made a break in the lane after an unsuccessful three-wide move heading to three-quarters. "It's good to team up with Doug. Carl, he's hard to catch, usually you get one near him and then he opens up two more on you," offered Gregg McNair. "It's a great race to win. It's a hard race to win. "That colt there, all winter he didn't really like to cut the miles that good. I was a little concerned over that, but he was that way last week and raced good doing it. He'll likely hit the next Gold and hope he continues on in there. It's hard to say what kind of a mile that was today. There's a pretty good wind and everything. Compared to the fillies, the colts got home real quick."
