ARCADIA, Calif. - Getaway Car, second in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity in December in his last start, will not travel to Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Derby on Feb. 22, and instead is scheduled to start in the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby in New Mexico on Feb. 16, trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday. The $400,000 Sunland Park Derby is run at 1 1/16 miles. The $1.5 million Saudi Derby is run at a mile. Baffert said the extensive travel was the primary reason to change race goals. “It’s a tough ship for him,” he said of the journey to the Middle East. Getaway Car won the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar in his second start last August and has finished second or fourth in his last four starts, including a fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 1 In the Los Alamitos Futurity, Getaway Car was beaten 3 1/2 lengths by Journalism, who worked a half-mile in a quick 59.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday. Trained by Michael McCarthy, Journalism is scheduled to start in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on March 1. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports In other notable works by 3-year-olds at Santa Anita on Sunday, the McCarthy-trained Bullard worked five furlongs in 1:00.80.
