Cleopatras Charge earned 50 points for the Kentucky Oaks on Sunday when she pulled a 79-1 upset in the $300,000 Sunland Park Oaks, surging for a three-quarters of a length victory over Ali Alley. It was another head back in third to Manorelli, who was a half-length clear of fourth-place finisher Tyler’s Dream. The second- through fourth-place finishers also earned points, on a scale of 20-10-5. Manorelli is the lone filly among the top four nominated to the Kentucky Oaks. According to the nomination sheet, supplementary entries to the race are $25,000. Cleopatras Charge ($161.40) had just one horse beat in the early stages of the race, when Queen of Thorns lost rider Victor Espinoza out of the starting gate and proceeded to race with the field. Espinoza was up and fine following the incident, according to officials with Sunland. Manorelli proceeded to set fractions of 21.35 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.28 for the half-mile and 1:11.15 for six furlongs. Cleopatras Charge closed through the lane under jockey Jorge Carreno and covered the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:46.33. “She ran a real big race,” winning trainer Gary Cross said on the simulcast feed from Sunland. “I told Jorge to take back and let the speed go and she ran big.” Cross said plans for Cleopatras Charge would be made after he talks to breeder and owner Samuel F. Learn more Sharapova takes Harry Henson Sharapova became a stakes winner Sunday with a stylish, one-length victory over Lady Commissioner in the $100,000 Harry Henson Handicap for fillies and mares. It was another neck back in third to Lisette. Sharapova ($4.60) settled in third as Bold Rey took the field through an opening half-mile in 46.58 seconds, pushed along by Our Iris Rose. Sharapova advanced as Our Iris Rose took the lead through six furlongs in 1:10.63, with the eventual winner pushing past that one in the stretch and covering the distance in 1:36.29. Joel Rosario was aboard for trainer Peter Eurton. “We super excited,” co-owner Richard Hausman said in a post-race interview broadcast by Sunland. “We think she has a lot of talent.” Sharapova is a daughter of Outwork. She also races for David Bernsen, Exline-Border Racing, and Steve Dorfman. Stakes triple for stallion Attila’s Storm Rosario had another stakes win on the card when he guided Cheese Tray ($7.20) to a three-quarter-length victory over Jet N G in the $120,000 New Mexico State University Handicap. The winner covered the one mile and 70 yards for older New Mexico-breds in 1:41.82. Todd Fincher trains Cheese Tray, a son of Attila’s Storm who races for his breeders, J. Kirk and Judy Robison. The Robisons own champion Jackie’s Warrior, whose regular rider is Rosario. Fincher swept the top three spots in the $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby with Diabolical Storm ($7) winning by a half-length over Massive Roar. It was another half-length in third to Lonzo Who. Edwin Maldonado rode the winner for Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant and Derrol Hubbard. Diabolical Storm, who is by Attila’s Storm, covered the 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds bred in New Mexico in 1:45.92. Jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. had been scheduled to ride Diabolical Storm, but was off his mounts following an incident behind the starting gates prior to the first race Sunday, said track spokesperson Eric Alwan. Bella Dona ($3) was a 3 3/4-length winner over Corrina Corrina in the $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks. She covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.23. Luis Fuentes was aboard for trainer Simon Buechler.
