One of the premier Kentucky Derby preps each year is the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
The 1 1/16-mile race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds has produced the likes of Kentucky Derby winners Orb, Thunder Gulch, Spectacular Bid, and Tim Tam, as well as top overall runners Forty Niner and Union Rags. It is also known as a race that produces top stallions, as Scat Daddy, sire of Triple Crown winner Justify, and Quality Road, who has sired some of the best runners of the last decade. Proud Truth won the race in 1985 and took the Breeders’ Cup Classic later that year. Code of Honor, who won the race in 2019, went on to career earnings of over $2.9 million.
Inaugurated in 1945, the Fountain of Youth has called to the top sophomores in Florida each year. It is one of the Sunshine State's stepping-stones to the Triple Crown, which starts with the Holy Bull Stakes in January and concludes with the rich Florida Derby, worth $1 million and run either the last weekend in March or the first weekend in April.
The Fountain of Youth card includes eight other stakes races as well, topped by the Kentucky Oaks prep, the Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes, and the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Mile. It is one of the best betting cards of the winter.
