Profile by Randy Goulding

Strengths: He seems versatile enough and doesn't need to bring his racetrack with him. Like the fact that he has won on both dirt and Polytrack, albeit via disqualification at Arlington. He could also be ready for a big effort in the third start of his form cycle. Hey, he's a gelding and he will be a big price. Sound familiar?

Weaknesses: He does his best running late, and the shape of the race will likely favor horses that will be within striking distance of what figures to be a moderate pace. Lack of class is another issue. He does have a Grade 3 win to his credit, but he was awarded the victory via DQ and has never actually finished first in a graded race. His career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 91 isn't going to cut it, and he will need to take a big step forward in order to contend with this group.

Strategy: Jeremy Rose picks up the call for the first time, and Rose will likely let him settle early and hope for some kind of pace to develop. The one time Terrain was near the lead going around two turns was in the Delta Jackpot, and he faded badly to finish more than 12 lengths behind Big Drama.

Value: Hard to love him on top, but he will be a big price and it wouldn't be a complete shock if he snuck into the bottom of the tri or super. Using Rachel Alexandra and Pioneerof the Nile as key horses on top, Terrain could offer some value in the exotics.

Sire: A Grade 1 winner at two, Sky Mesa hails from a powerful family. His dam, Caress, was a Grade 3 winner on both turf and dirt. Other quality runners from this family include graded winners Country Cat, Bernstein, Wiseman’s Ferry, and champion juvenile filly Outstandingly. Busanda, the dam of the legendary Buckpasser, is Sky Mesa’s fifth dam.
Sky Mesa won races at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles.

Dam: Terrain's three-quarter brother, Clergy, was stakes-placed at one mile. Their dam, Minery, won three straight sprints with triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures to begin her career. The lone blemish on the stakes-winner's record came in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga. She never started in a route race.
The second dam, Orseno, was an unraced half-sister to Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Unbridled.
Other notable names in the female family include Wood Memorial winner Cahill Road, and multiple stakes-winner Pentelicus as well as champions Dr. Fager and Ta Wee.

Outlook: Terrain may be better served in middle-distance races, but his pedigree is acceptable for the classic distances, and he should get 1 3/16 miles under ideal conditions.
