Pedigree Profile (by Frank Mitchell)

Pedigree: While it’s unclear that pedigrees can be ironic, that of Anak Nakal comes close. He is by the Cryptoclearance horse Victory Gallop, who won the 1998 Belmont and burst the Triple Crown bubble of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Real Quiet. And the colt is out of a mare by Quiet American, who is the sire of Real Quiet.

In addition, both Quiet American and Cryptoclearance are sons of Fappiano, the most classic breeding son of Mr. Prospector. In addition, Fappiano sired Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Unbridled, who sired a winner of each of the Triple Crown events.

Racing Type: As a juvenile, Anak Nakal exceeded expectations for success based on his pedigree. He had the closing ability and stamina to win graded stakes last year, and with a female family of French lines that promised immense stamina, the prospects for Anak Nakal looked certain to improve this year. To date, however, he has not shown the level of improvement and added strengthening needed to remain competitive at the highest level, finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby.

Analysis (by Michael Hammersly)

Strengths: The circumstances may have the stars aligned for him. First, the location – he won his only previous start at Belmont, his career debut, so you know he likes the track. His sire, Victory Gallop, rallied smartly along the inside to win this same race back in 1998, foiling Real Quiet’s Triple Crown bid in the final jump. And while he hasn’t flourished as a 3-year-old he flashed significant talent and promise at 2.

Weaknesses: As mentioned, he hasn’t really flourished as a 3-year-old. He has not been a factor in any of his four starts this year, all graded stakes. He needs to make up 15 lengths on Big Brown, too. The one time he ran against the heavy favorite, in the Kentucky Derby, Anak Nakal passed a number of horses to finish seventh, but was beaten 15 lengths. Also, from a Beyer Speed Figure standpoint he has yet to show he has what it takes to win the Belmont. The average winning Beyer since 1992 is 107 – Anak Nakal has yet to break the 90 barrier.

Strategy: There’s little doubt he does his best work from off the pace. He surely figures to settle well back and try to make a long, sustained run.

Value: Just a few months ago there were those who had this horse among their top few Derby contenders, so if you still believe, here’s your chance to get a horse you once loved at 20-1 or 30-1. He’s the kind of big-priced horse who could help stimulate your payoff in exotic wagering.
