The Skinny
Bobby Frankel spoiled the party at last year's Belmont when his Empire Maker denied Funny Cide the Triple Crown. It would truly be an upset if Master David upends Smarty Jones in the 2004 running of the "Test of the Champion." Diminutive son of Grand Slam may have trouble sustaining his rally at this demanding distance, and he has lacked the killer instinct necessary to win at this level (note minor awards in the Remsen, Santa Catalina, Wood Memorial, and Peter Pan). Didn't think he really cared for this track in the Peter Pan as he didn't show any of his customary tactical speed, and was trailing until midway on the turn. Angled to the best part of the track entering the stretch, and finished willingly for third, but was no match for runaway winner Purge. Must show better early interest in order to threaten in the Belmont. Must respect Frankel, especially at a price, but others entice more on the win end of things.
