BC-less Lido Palace surprise allowance entrant

ELMONT, N.Y. - Lido Palace, who would have run in Saturday's $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic if not for an $800,000 supplemental fee, unexpectedly showed up in Sunday's entries at Belmont Park.

Lido Palace, who won the Grade 1 Woodward and finished second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at this meet, will be a short-priced favorite going against seven others in the $58,000 money allowance. The race is the feature of the closing-day card.

Debuting for Sahadi, Puxa Saco tries Anoakia

ARCADIA, Calif. - Puxa Saco arrived in California earlier this month, following a third to Ivanavinalot in the Brave Raj Stakes at Calder on Sept. 21.

The form of the Brave Raj Stakes was enhanced when Ivanavinalot - who is among the pre-entries for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Arlington Park on Oct. 26 - won the My Dear Girl Stakes at Calder last weekend.

Owner Richard Rowan is aiming much lower with Puxa Saco. The filly is now trained by Jenine Sahadi, and makes her California debut in Sunday's $75,000 Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over six furlongs.

Early pace key in Premier's

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The distance of the $100,000 Premier's on Sunday is 1 3/8 miles, but the first half-mile could be the most important part of the race. There isn't one committed front-runner in the field, and the horse who controls the early tempo should have a big advantage.

Shacane, who has started only six times, looks like the most likely candidate to set the pace, but it's hard to say if he has the maturity to beat a seasoned horse like the probable favorite, Futural.

Promising fillies clash in sprint

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Miss Crissy versus La Petite Justice. It's an intriguing matchup on paper, and those two juvenile fillies should provide some fireworks on the racetrack Sunday, when they clash at six furlongs in the $163,500 Fanfreluche Stakes at Woodbine.

Miss Crissy, a good-looking daughter of Bold n' Flashy, graduated second time out in a five-furlong maiden special for trainer Emile Allain, who said he had some trying times with her initially.

Timing is everything for Highhopesemilyluck on Sunday when she makes her first start around two turns in the $60,000 Louisiana Breeders' Oaks at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.

She will have to wait longer than usual to unleash her powerful closing kick in the 1 1/16-mile race, which is one of four stakes on the card restricted to fillies and mares bred in Louisiana. Purses for the races, part of a two-day Louisiana Breeders' Festival, total $190,000.
