Former jockey Walter Swinburn, who won three runnings of the English Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 1996 in a 22-year riding career, died in England on Monday. He was 55.
No cause of death was given, but Swinburn had been suffering from epilepsy.
Born in England, Swinburn’s career began in 1978. He was best known for winning the 1981 English Derby on Shergar by 10 lengths at the age of 19, with his first mount in the race.
Swinburn won the 1986 English Derby on Shahrastani and again nine years later on Lammtarra.

HONG KONG – Where has Highland Reel traveled? Africa? No. South America? No. Antarctica? No.
All other continents? Yes.
And it is not like Highland Reel merely shows up. The hickory 4-year-old has run top races all over the world, and on Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, he’ll try to win the Group 1, $2.1 million Hong Kong Vase for the second year in a row.
HONG KONG – The best races have brought out the best performances from Japanese star Maurice. If Maurice has saved anything close to his best for last, he will go out a winner Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse in the Group 1, $3.2 million Hong Kong Cup.
The 5-year-old Maurice, who goes to stud following the Hong Kong Cup, generally has been excellent, scoring 10 wins from 17 starts. He has particularly excelled in Group 1 races, winning five of six. His loss, a second-place finish, came in May when Logotype led on a muddling pace in the Yasuda Kinen.
