Live action returns to Kentucky at Red Mile

Quarter Horse racing returns to Kentucky for the first time since 1992 with a two-day meet with 16 races on Saturday and Sunday at The Red Mile in Lexington.

The last time Quarter Horse racing was run in Kentucky, a 30-day season was conducted at Bluegrass Downs in Paducah.

Because there is a live Quarter Horse meet in Kentucky, racetracks are allowed to take Quarter Horse simulcasts from other states.

Calif. panel to discuss racing dates

The California Horse Racing Board's dates committee will hold its second open hearing into the allocation of 2005 racing dates Thursday at the Alameda County Fair simulcast facility.

At a meeting of the dates committee in April, representatives of Magna Entertainment Corp. and the Bay Meadows Land Company both requested dates that have traditionally been run at Bay Meadows in San Mateo.

Farish leaves ambassador post

Will Farish, owner of Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky., has resigned his position as America's ambassador to Great Britain and returned to Kentucky.

In a guest commentary printed Saturday in The Times of London, Farish said, "It is now time to conclude my tenure here and turn my attention to my family and business."

Farish, who will leave his post officially on July 10, was at his farm in Versailles on Monday.

Larry T. Smith, the owner and breeder of the 1998 Texas horse of the year, Thomas Jo, has been elected president of the Texas Thoroughbred Association, effective June 24. Smith previously served as the group's secretary and treasurer.

Sunday stakes recaps (6/27/04)

* Yoursmineours ($4.60) outdueled Josie G. in a spirited pace battle to win the $50,000 Lorelei Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Longshot Lucky Tunnel reported home third, followed by Outright Buck.

* Satan's Code ($12.80), a 6-year-old gelding who didn't win his maiden until two months ago, romped to a 5 1/2-length victory in the $50,000 W. Meredith Bailes Memorial, a six-furlong sprint for Virginia-breds at Colonial Downs.

Saturday stakes recaps (6/26/04)

* Sharky's Review ($3.40), the 2003 Iowa-bred horse of the year, captured the $70,000 Hawkeyes Handicap for a second straight year when she rallied for a two-length victory under jockey Perry Compton in the 1 1/16-mile race for Iowa-bred fillies and mares at Prairie Meadows.

* Vazandar ($16.20), a Kissoon Thoroughbreds homebred, became the first statebred to win an open company stakes at Canterbury Park since Courtly Kathy won the Hoist the Flag Stakes in 1998. Vazandar drew off by two lengths in the $50,000 Come Summer Stakes for 3-year-old colts.

Youbet plans wireless wagering

Youbet.com, the online wagering company, plans to launch a wireless device on July 21 that will allow account-holders to wager from anywhere in the United States, according to an official for the company who is developing the device.

The handheld device, called Youbet Anywhere, will allow a Youbet subscriber to place wagers wirelessly on any track offered by Youbet, according to Sean Conley, the brand manager for the device. Youbet will charge users $19.99 a month to use the device, Conley said.

Tom Harris has been hired as track announer at Retama Park near San Antonio, which opens for a 39-night Thoroughbred meet on July 23. Harris, 42, called races at the track from 1996-1998 and has also announced at such tracks as Garden State and Yakima Meadows.

Farish, Hunt to join Texas Hall

William Farish and Nelson Bunker Hunt will be inducted into the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Lone Star Park near Dallas on Oct. 23.

Ben Hudson and the late Anne Burnett Tandy, who both have been leaders in the Quarter Horse industry, will also be inducted into the Texas Hall, at a separate ceremony at Sam Houston Race Park on Aug. 14.
