Male 3-year-old division title remains up for grabs this summer

Debra A. Roma
Kentucky Derby winner Mage returned to training on June 7, and several stakes are being considered for his next start.

ELMONT, N.Y. – It could be a fun summer in the 3-year-old division.

With three different winners of the Triple Crown races, seven different winners of Grade 1 stakes, and several other talented runners in the division, Grade 1 summer races such as the Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 22 and the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 26 should be pivotal in defining a division leader.

Arcangelo gives Arrogate first classic victory

Barbara D. Livingston
Arrogate, who died in 2020, became a classic-winning sire when Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes.

With every passing month, the loss of champion Arrogate early in his stallion career becomes starker. It was apparent again Saturday evening, as Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes, conferring classic sire status on Arrogate posthumously.

Belmont Stakes: Winner Arcangelo may now target Jim Dandy and/or Travers

Arcangelo (right) earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday's triumph in the Belmont Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Arcangelo, the Belmont Stakes winner, will soon ship to Saratoga, where he will train this summer and where he potentially could run in races such as the Jim Dandy on July 29 and/or the Travers on Aug. 26, his connections said Sunday morning.

Trainer Jena Antonucci said she will be in no hurry to decide when to run Arcangelo, who beat champion 2-year-old Forte by 1 1/2 lengths in Saturday’s Belmont, and will let the horse dictate when he’s ready to go.

Belmont Stakes: Forte comes up short after challenging Triple Crown season

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Todd Pletcher (right) leads Forte and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to the track for the Belmont Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – From juvenile champion, to Florida Derby winner, to being scratched as the favorite on Kentucky Derby morning, the roller-coaster ride that Forte has been on during the opening half of his 3-year-old campaign didn’t quite end on the high note that trainer Todd Pletcher and his owners – Mike Repole and Vinnie Viola – had hoped for with his second-place finish in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Trainer Jena Antonucci and jockey Javier Castellano celebrate after Arcangelo's Belmont Stakes victory.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Fifty years ago, Secretariat made Penny Chenery the First Lady of Thoroughbred racing with his Triple Crown sweep that culminated with a performance in the Belmont Stakes that still resonates - and was celebrated mightily this week.

Saturday, at Belmont Park, there was another first involving a woman, that being Jena Antonucci who became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race when Arcangelo beat defending 2-year-old champion Forte by 1 1/2 lengths in the 155th Belmont Stakes before an announced crowd of 48,089.

Patience helped get Arcangelo to Belmont Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Arcangelo was bought for just $35,000 by owner Jon Ebbert at the 2021 Keeneland yearling sale. Now the Arrogate colt stands a solid chance of winning the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

ELMONT, N.Y. – When owner Jon Ebbert bought a son of Arrogate at the 2021 Keeneland yearling sale, he said his vision was to have a horse for the 2024 Breeders’ Cup. How he would get there and would he even be good enough to get there were unknowns.

That son of Arrogate, now named Arcangelo, seems to have charted a different path for himself, Ebbert, and trainer Jena Antonucci. In his fourth career start – and his stakes debut – Arcangelo won the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes, a victory that literally helped pay his way to Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Stakes: Air quality back to normal; racing, training resume

Debra A. Roma
Belmont Stakes contender Arcangelo (left) takes to the main track Friday morning with trainer Jena Antonucci alongside on her pony.

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Instead of smoke, there were mostly blue skies and a yellow -- not blood orange -- sun high above Belmont Park Friday.

One day after training was canceled here and in Saratoga due to do poor air quality stemming from the Canadian wildfires, the air quality index -- which has now replaced legs as the first thing horsemen check in the morning -- dropped to the moderate level on Long Island, more than acceptable for normal training operations to resume.

By 11:30 a.m., the air quality index here, was in the good range.

Belmont Stakes clocker report: A final summary from both Belmont and Churchill

National Treasure breezes at BEL June 5 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
National Treasure had an unusual work 10 days after his Preakness victory but turned in a strong effort Monday, breezing five furlongs and galloping out seven.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Despite the unexpected glitch of missing a day of training Thursday due to poor air quality in the local area, the serious work had already been done preparing the nine members of this year’s Belmont Stakes field for the main event on Saturday.

With that in mind, it’s time to take one final look at just how those preparations have gone the previous two weeks. The majority of the training took place locally, but this report also includes the Brad Cox-trained trio of Belmont starters, who did all their major work at Churchill Downs.
