Well, the half-full view of Sunday’s off-the-board finish by Xodo and a resulting $50 loss is the bankroll has developed a flair for the dramatic. After 354 races in 35 days, a profit or loss for the meet has come down to Labor Day and a final play on the getaway card.

Let’s shamefully protect our slim profit and (choose your analogy) by taking a knee, issuing an intentional pass, icing the puck and running out the clock.

RACE 4: D’wild Ride has been first or second in her last six dirt starts, and comes off a win in the Regret Stakes. The Monmouth shipper is drawn on outside in a seven-horse starter handicap, and seems likely to get a clean trip. We’ll settle for a bit less than her morning-line odds of 2-1, but not much less.

The bet: $20 to win and $30 to place on D’wild Ride (minimum odds 8-5)
