How TimeformUS Early & Late Ratings Work?

  • TimeformUS Early and Late Ratings measure a horse's speed and running style, providing an instant measurement of where a horse is likely to be positioned early in a race and that horse's late kick
  • These ratings are on the Timeform global scale, utilized by TimeformUS in its speed and pace figures. The Time form global scale is displayed for some foreign runners in DRF PPs. Typically, the Timeform global scale runs about 15 -20 points higher than Beyer Speed Figures.
  • These numbers help identify horses with the most early speed/late speed in a race.
  • The Early/Late Ratings are created by looking at a horse's last five races and factoring in position and running style along with early/late fractions to determine the early/late ability of each horse.
  • Factors like distance and surface are also considered in the ratings. For example, a horse that closes in 23 seconds on dirt will usually get a higher late rating than one that closes in 23 seconds in turf. A horse that closes in 23 seconds at one mile would get a much better late rating than a horse finishing in 23 seconds at 6 furlongs.

More on Early Ratings

The Early Ratings algorithm incorporates a horse's first call position in the field in his prior races, his speed a half-mile into those races, and the role of the field size (it is easier to be toward the front in a smaller field).

More on Late Ratings

The Late Ratings algorithm measures a horse's second call position in the field in his prior races, his speed at the second last call in those races, and how he finished (passing horses and how many). Late ratings are especially useful when it seems a race will favor closers and you want to know which closer will be coming home fastest. If a track is favoring closers, or if the pace setup of a given race will favor closes, using the Late Rating can help you identify a strong closer.
