Goffredo gets close win at Suffolk
By NOEL MICHAELS
Jerry Goffredo of West Roxbury, Mass. took first place in a field in a field of 190 entries to win the Suffolk Downs Handicapping Contest on June 12. With the win, Goffredo became the first of three qualifiers from Suffolk Downs who will play their way into the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship VI next January in Las Vegas.
The Suffolk Downs contest, which was the first of three qualifying contests scheduled at the track this year, cost $25 to enter and drew a field of entrants from 11 states and one Canadian province. The one-day event consisted of 10 races including three races from Suffolk, three races from Belmont, two races from Monmouth, and two races from Hollywood Park.
Goffredo compiled a contest-winning bankroll of $1,694 based on 10 mythical $20 win-and-place bets. That total was enough to hold off runner-up Timothy Yee of Medford, Mass. by a mere $18 margin. The top 10 finishers all won cash prizes, but only the winner earned a qualifying berth in NHC VI.
Suffolk Downs will host similar contests on Aug. 7 ($100 entry fee) and Nov. 27 ($50 entry fee). The winners of both will join Goffredo in Las Vegas.
