Jobby Blevins, a retired auto worker from Lexington, Kentucky who competes in several contests a year in order to qualify for the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship, realized his goal by winning the River Downs Handicapping Contest on July 12.

Blevins topped a field of 100 entrants to earn a trip to Las Vegas to compete in NHC V to be held Jan. 23-24 at Bally's. Blevins also earned a first prize of $5,000 in cash. The River Downs contest cost $100 to enter.

Blevins, who also owns horses under the name Buller Works Stable, pegged the winners of four races in a five-race span beginning with the third race at River Downs in order to secure the victory.

Both of the top two finishers from event earned trips to Las Vegas. Joining Blevins on Team River Downs at the National Handicapping Championship will be second-place finisher Terri Petty, a teacher's assistant from Louisville, Kentucky who earned a $1,000 prize. The runner-up is the wife of two-time National Handicapping Championship qualifier Dewey Petty, who finished 105th in 2002 and T56th in 2003.

River Downs' other two NHC V qualifying spots for NHC V went to Bill Weber of Cincinnati and Bill O'Niell of Oakwood, Ohio, who finished 1-2 in a handicapping contest held on May 31.
