Weber earns return trip to NHC
River Downs
Bill Weber of Cincinnati won the River Downs/DRF Handicapping Contest on May 31. He will be making his second trip to the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship.
Bill Weber, a 72-year-old former National Handicapping Championship qualifier from Cincinnati, earned his second trip to the DRF/NTRA NHC thanks to a victory over a field of 100 players in the River Downs/DRF Handicapping Contest on May 31. NHC V will be held on Jan. 23-24, 2004 at Bally's - Las Vegas.

Weber built a contest-winning bankroll of $96.00 based on $2 to win and $2 to place bets on the day's full card from River Downs. He earned first prize of $5,000, plus another $300 for also finishing fourth in the contest on a second entry.

Commenting on his strategy, Weber said "I play my logical choices through the first half of the contest and then assess the leaderboard to see if I need to reach a little and change my gameplan. I have only one [secret weapon], the Daily Racing Form."

Weber won by a comfortable margin over runner-up Bill O'Niell of Oakwood, Ohio, who finished second with a total of $82.80. O'Niell earned a $1,000 prize and also won a trip to Las Vegas and qualified for NHC V.

River Downs will host a second handicapping contest on July 12 to determine its final two NHC V qualifiers.
