David "Trey" Stiles of Houston, Texas (left) won a Retama handicapping contest for the second straight year.
David "Trey" Stiles of Houston, Texas is heading back to the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship for the second time in a row after winning the same Retama Park qualifying contest for the second straight year. Stiles outclassed a field of 90 entrants in the Retama handicapping contest on Sept. 27 to earn first prize of $5,000 and a trip to NHC V on Jan. 23-24, 2004 at Bally's - Las Vegas.

Stiles, a 35-year-old attorney originally from Beaumont, Texas, compiled a final contest-winning bankroll of $108 based on 15 real money $2 win and $2 place bets on both live and simulcast races. His total was enough to hold off runner-up Earl Wright of San Antonio who settled for second-prize of $3,000 for finishing with a bankroll of $103.70. It was more than $10 back to third-place finisher Wendy Newberry of San Antonio with $93.10. Newberry earned $1,500, but no trip to Las Vegas.

Both Stiles and Wright will advance to the National Handicapping Championship finals along with the top two finishers from Retama's Aug. 23 qualifier, Calvin Slater of Houston and Brad Hillman of Tyler, Texas.

Stiles is the only member of the four-person Retama squad who has been to the national championship before. He recorded a 33rd-place finish (out of 213) at NHC IV in January 2003.
