John Jaworski of Eagan, Minn. won Canterbury Park's sixth annual $50,000 Road to Kentucky Handicapping Tournament which concluded on May 3. Jaworski earned top prize of $5,000 for his win in the 14-week tournament, and also qualified for the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship V to be held in January of 2004 at Bally's - Las Vegas.
The Road to Kentucky tournament was a free weekly event requiring entrants to place mythical $20 across-the-board wagers on selected simulcasts, with Derby prep races awarding double points. Weekly prizes were awarded for the most points earned, and points also accumulated throughout all 14 weeks of the tournament.
Jaworski took the lead in the eleventh week and stayed on top, holding off several challengers who selected the triple-point earner Funny Cide in the final race of the contest, the Kentucky Derby. Jaworski's final point total of 12,662 was enough to beat second-place finisher Joe Gauthier by 28 points.
More than 1,500 entrants participated in the tournament, and prize money totaling $50,000 was awarded during the event.
Canterbury Park's next DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship qualifying event will be the Dog Days of Summer Handicapping Contest to be held on August 9-10.
