Shurman won the second NHC qualifying contest on July 20, turning his $200 starting amount into a real-money bankroll of $5,470. Bio: Tournament veteran estimates he has played in about 100 contests the last 20 years with four major victories, two dozen Top 10 finishes and close to $200,000 in winnings. Bested 492 participants to win the World Cup of Thoroughbred Handicapping and $60,000 in 1984 at the MGM in Reno, beating by a mere dime fellow NHC qualifier Dewey Petty, whom he has not seen since that contest. Attended the 2001 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship with his brother Paul, who finished 191st ($25.80) playing for Team Mohegan Sun.
