Zia Park: Medellin sets track record by riding seven winners
Email
Jockey Alejandro Medellin rode seven winners at Zia Park on Monday to set a record for wins on a card at the Hobbs, N.M. track. Medellin had nine mounts on the program of mixed racing, and registered five of his wins aboard Thoroughbreds and two on Quarter Horses.
“Everything went perfectly,” said Medellin, 36. “Good horses, good post positions, not many problems in the race.”
Medellin, a native of Mexico City whose first win in the United States came in 2003 at Fairplex, has won multiple riding titles in New Mexico. Monday, he won with his first seven mounts on the 11-race card. In the opener, Medellin guided Blazin Mr Perry ($5) to a win in the race for Quarter Horses.
Medellin’s other Quarter Horse score came in the fourth race, with Asian Brook ($32.60). He then won the fifth with Blastitary ($12.60); the sixth with Proud Spanky ($5.60); the seventh with Western Way ($15); the eighth with Blue Samurai ($6.60); and the ninth with Certification ($6).
Medellin has won 50 of 248 starts this meet at Zia, which opened Sept. 8 and continues through Dec. 4. So far this meet, his mounts have earned $1,021,090.
Best Bets
HE AIN'T BLUFFING has been idle seven weeks, but has already posted three layover Beyers either as a first-time starter or when fresh, and new trainer Michelle Nevin has done well here lately with Gulfstream shippers off short breaks, including Teaks North in a stake earlier this week; went well on this track in only try. BUGSY LOSTY has been freshened since disappointing effort on Aqueduct's inner track first time in from SoCal circuit; money chances off two prior dirt races. SATURDAY APPEAL ran a big race at 15-1 when blinkers came on last Nov. 29, and then won with them off Feb.
