Zia Park: Feature Mr Bojangles brings win streak into Hobbs Futurity

Feature Mr Bojangles and Silver For Me, who won two of the three major Quarter Horse futurities this summer at Ruidoso Downs, will meet for the first time Sunday in the Grade 2, $265,000 Hobbs America Futurity at Zia Park. The 400-yard race is half of a rich Quarter Horse stakes double that includes the Grade 2, $155,151 Hobbs America Derby.

Feature Mr Bojangles, the winner of the Grade 1, $700,000 Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso in July, figures to be an odds-on favorite in the Hobbs America. He will be seeking his sixth consecutive win and is fresh off a memorable trial effort at Zia on Sept. 24. Feature Mr Bojangles won his 400-yard trial by more than two lengths, and his time of 19.28 seconds was hardly rivaled as the second fastest qualifier, Mr Taka B, covered the same distance in 19.41.

Feature Mr Bojangles began his win streak in June when he won his maiden in the $120,000 Four Corners Futurity at SunRay Park. G.R. Carter Jr. was aboard, and has the mount again Sunday for trainer Roberto Sanchez. Feature Mr Bojangles races for a partnership comprised of R.D. Hubbard, Jim Helzer, S/M Cattle Co., and Jamie Dominguez.

Silver For Me won the Grade  1 Ruidoso Futurity in June, and although he did not qualify for the Rainbow he did win his July  8 trial for that race. Silver For Me defeated what has turned out to be a strong field, as the runner-up, Sixes Streak, went on to set the fastest qualifying time for the Grade 1 Dash for Cash Futurity that was to be run Saturday night at Lone Star Park.

Silver For Me was given a break after the Rainbow trials and made his comeback last month at Zia. He was second by three-quarters of a length in his trial for the Hobbs while timed in 19.58 seconds. Trainer Jackie Riddle has given the mount to Carlos Madeira.

◗ Jd Baccarat, whose four wins this year have all come in trial races, seeks to become a stakes winner in the Hobbs America Derby. He won his trial by a length Sept. 25, and his time of 21.32 seconds for the 440 yards made him the fastest qualifier for the finale. Jd Baccarat has made one stakes start this year, finishing third to multiple Grade 1 winner Llano Teller in the Ruidoso Derby.
