Zenyatta 5 for 5 after Milady

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Five races into her career, Zenyatta has yet to be challenged.

Saturday at Hollywood Park, Zenyatta won the $183,300 Milady Handicap, drawing off late to win the Grade 2 race by 2 1/2 lengths.

Ridden by Mike Smith, Zenyatta ($2.60) was timed in 1:41.17 for 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track, remaining unbeaten after five starts for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs. By Street Cry, Zenyatta, 4, has earned $554,580.

The only suspense occurred at the start when Zenyatta was bumped by Romance Is Diane and Double Trouble and dropped back to last.

“All I can say is just amazing,” Smith said. “She was squeezed at the start and I just didn't want her to fall. I knew if she stayed up, she was going to be tough to beat.”

Romance Is Diane had the early lead, stalked by Double Trouble through early fractions of 24.74 and 48.19 seconds.

At the end of the backstretch, Romance Is Diane led by two lengths over Double Trouble, who faded from contention on the turn. Santa Teresita made the first move on Romance Is Diane, but was quickly challenged by Zenyatta with a three-wide move.

In early stretch, Santa Teresita led briefly, but Zenyatta took the lead passing the eighth pole to win under a hand ride. Santa Teresita finished 5 3/4 lengths in front of Kris' Sis in the field of five fillies and mares.

“On the turn, I just wanted to get her running because she's so big,” Smith said. “She just galloped.”

Foxysox, La Tee, and Model were scratched on Saturday morning.

Manhattan Beach: It's Starry Pursuit

Starry Pursuit won her first stakes in the $76,375 Manhattan Beach Stakes at six furlongs on turf for 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Starry Pursuit ($2.80) stalked pacesetter Thunder and Ice to early stretch before pulling away to win by three-quarters of a length over Porto Marmay. Exquisite Timing finished third in the field of five. Starry Pursuit was timed in 1:08.71.

Starry Pursuit has won 4 of 5 starts and $126,225 for a partnership and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Her lone loss was an eighth in the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita in April.
