Zardana stalks and pounces

ARCADIA, Calif. - Zardana showed a new dimension at Santa Anita in Monday's $64,100 Swingtime Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile on turf. Instead of taking the lead, as she had in past races, she stalked pacesetter Bahama Mama to early stretch and held off a late threat from General Consensus to win by three-quarters of a length.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Zardana ($5.80) ran a mile on turf in 1:34.87. Bahama Mama held third in the field of six.

The victory was the first for the 5-year-old Brazilian-bred mare since an optional claimer at Hollywood Park in May and her first in a stakes since the restricted Osunitas Handicap at Del Mar in July 2008.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher and trained by John Shirreffs, Zardana has won 6 of 15 starts and $203,421.

Rowan: Free Flying Soul breaks through

Free Flying Soul ($5.40) won her first stakes in $70,810 Louis Rowan Stakes on Monday, her first win since March.

Ridden by Mike Smith, Free Flying Soul ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.26. A 4-year-old filly, she stalked Oilgonewile, who set a quick pace of 21.91 and 44.72 seconds. Free Flying Soul rallied to win by two lengths over Golden Doc A. Ashley's Kitty, who was in traffic on the turn, finished third in the field of five.

Free Flying Soul has won 3 of 7 starts and $115,626 for Marsha Naify and trainer Bruce Headley. Free Flying Soul beat maidens and won an optional claimer in March, and lost her next three starts before rebounding on Monday.
