Zafisio scores for banned trainer

The 2-year-old Zafisio reveled in the heavy ground at Saint-Cloud on Sunday, defeating fellow British invader Prince Siegfried in the $323,000 Criterium International by a head while traveling the mile in 1:46.10. Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon winner Silver Frost was third, a half-length behind the runner-up.

Zafisio's Lambourn-based trainer Paul Blockley, who earned his first Group 1 victory, had been ruled off for 2 1/2 years by the stewards of the British Horse Racing Board for his involvement in an ongoing investigation into the Betfred race-fixing scandal. Blockley and jockey Dean McKeown were found guilty last month of conspiring to prevent their horses to win in races in which their owners bet against their own horses. Blockley has been allowed to saddle horses while the decision is under appeal.

Zafisio had won a listed race at Goodwood before finishing fourth after being checked behind Naval Officer in the Group 3 Prix de Conde last time. On Sunday, he came form seventh to lead at the eighth pole under French rider Dominique Boeuf.
