Z Humor earns his fourth career stakes victory in the Maxxam Gold Cup.

Z Humor pushed his career earnings to $970,163 on Saturday night, when he cruised wire to wire in the $150,000 Maxxam Gold Cup at Sam Houston Race Park. It was the fourth career stakes win for Z Humor, a 6-year-old who in 2007 dead-heated for the win in the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot.

The Maxxam was the richest dirt race for older horses at the Sam Houston meet that will close on Monday. Stachys finished 2 ¼ lengths back in second. It was another neck back in third to Join in the Dance.

Z Humor ($25.80) took the initiative from the start in the 1 1/8-mile Maxxam,  and set fractions of 23.4, 48.38, and 1:13.67. Z Humor had more in the stretch, and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:50.84.

“It took me a little while to get him to relax, but once I got him settled, he ran his race,” said Gerard Melancon, who was aboard Z Humor for Zayat Stables and trainer Steve Asmussen.

Z Humor earned $90,000 for the win in the Maxxam. His other stakes scores have come in the Delta Mile at Delta Downs and the Ralph M. Hinds Invitational at Fairplex. As a 3-year-old, Z Humor was 14th in the Kentucky Derby. In all, he is 6 for 34 and has placed in 12 stakes during his career. Z Humor is a son of Distorted Humor.
