Yonkers: Newborn Sassy captures Lady Maud title

Mike Lizzi
This was the second straight year trainer Jo Ann Looney-King won the Lady Maud

Apple Bottom Jeans won the early battle for the lead over Newborn Sassy, but not the war as the latter out-paced the former in the lane to take the $109,050 Lady Maud for sophomore pacing fillies on Saturday night at Yonkers Raceway.

Driver Jason Bartlett and Apple Bottom Jeans used their draw advantage (post two) over Newborn Sassy (Jordan Stratton, post three) early and got to the front.  Stratton pulled Newborn Sassy out of the pocket on the way to the 27 4/5 opening quarter, but Bartlett was unrelenting, so Stratton scrambled back into the pocket.

From there, Apple Bottom Jeans would go on to click off a half in 56 3/5 and a three-quarters in 1:25 3/5, never facing a serious outside threat.  Apple Bottom Jeans continued to have the advantage around the final bend and into the stretch, but it was there that Stratton sent Newborn Sassy on the attack to the outside.  Once she was fed the clear air, Newborn Sassy responded, getting by Apple Bottom Jeans for the victory by half a length in 1:53.  Hug A Dragoness (George Brennan) was third, followed by Cheyenne Triengel (Scott Zeron), Time On My Hands (Dan Dube), and Skinny Dipper (Brian Sears)

"We were at a little bit of a post disadvantage.  (Bartlett) was able to control the race, but she raced a good race.  I had to snatch her up at the quarter pole and put her back in the two hole, but she responded through the stretch," said Stratton.  "Mr. and Mrs. King (Jim and trainer Jo Ann Looney-King) do a great job.  Their horses are always ready.  I know it really pained Timmy (Tetrick) that he couldn't be here to win with this filly, but I'm glad he put the faith in me to get the job done."

Looney-King also co-owns the victorious daughter of Western Ideal with CC Racing LLC.  Newborn Sassy now has 12 victories from 23 career starts, and she boosted her earnings to $491,365.  The 1-2 favorite, Newborn Sassy paid $3.00.
