Yonkers: Levy Memorial, Blue Chip Matchmaker to offer large purses

Foiled Again heads a list of 47 older pacers eligible to the George Morton Levy Memorial series at Yonkers Raceway.

The George Morton Levy Memorial and Blue Chip Matchmaker will get underway at Yonkers Raceway next weekend (March 21/22) with a potential star-studded cast of performers and a new twist that could lead to greater competition throughout the six-week series.

Leading the list of 47 eligible older pacers for the Levy is Foiled Again. The 10-year-old is coming off his third consecutive Older Pacer of the Year award and will look to win the Levy final (scheduled for April 26) for the third time in his career.

The final itself will be spiked with a huge purse in 2014 courtesy of a change in the conditions which require starters in each leg to pay a $1,000 fee to enter. Using a conservative estimate for the number of starters in each of the preliminary legs, the final should easily eclipse the $550,000 mark and could edge close to $600,000. Either number would be at least $100k over last year’s $450,000 pot.

The entry fee requirement should serve to weed out the also-rans as the series heads into the later legs. That in itself, combined with a stellar group of nominated horses, should provide for more competitive racing.

Foiled Again, who has finished second in each of the last two editions of the Levy final, will have his hooves full with perhaps the best collection of horses ever signed on to the Levy. A pair of 4-year-olds figure to have a major say each week. Apprentice Hanover and Word Power both appeared to be coming into their own towards the end of 2013, with the former currently undefeated this year.

The series is also loaded with millionaires. In addition to Foiled Again, the richest standardbred in the game, the following all belong to the elite club with seven-figure earnings: Aracache Hanover; Clear Vision; Heston Blue Chip; Michaels Power; Nob Hill High; Sweet Lou; Versado.

The Blue Chip Matchmaker for older mare pacers is also loaded with talent. Three-time Older Pacing Mare of the Year Anndrovette heads the list of 39 who are eligible to advance to a final which could be worth close to $350,000.

Defending champion Feeling You is expected to return to defend her crown. She is just one preliminary leg victory from joining nine other mares in the group of 39 eligibles who have already earned north of $1 million: Camille; Economy Terror; Handsoffmycookie; Hulas Z Tam; Krispy Apple; Monkey On My Wheel; Rocklamation; Royal Cee Cee N.

The Blue Chip Matchmaker series is contested each Friday with $40,000 legs while the Levy goes to post on Saturdays with a $50,000 pot up for grabs in each preliminary race.
