Ramona Disomma earned a spot in the Blue Chip Matchmaker final with a win on Friday.

There was intense drama in the final preliminary round of the Blue Chip Matchmaker series Friday night at Yonkers. With the top spots already settled for Saturday’s  (April 27) $285,000 finale, the bottom positions were still up in the air when the final of three $40,000 divisions went postward. Ramona Disomma, in 14th place and on the outside looking in, rallied gamely in the late stages to surge past the favorites and likely secure a spot in the final.

For much of the race it looked as if Ramona Disomma had the cards stacked against her. Driver Dan Dube aborted a leaving move and that left the early speed to Keepers Destiny briefly, with 4-5 favorite Darena Hanover and Yannick Gingras regaining before the :27 3/5 opening quarter. The pace slowed dramatically with no movement to the halfway point in :57 and then Darena Hanover sped into overdrive. Dube didn’t give up the chase as his veteran eight-year-old continued to attack as she’s done for ages over the Yonkers half-miler. By the final turn, Dube had his mare in position and following the 1:25 1/5 three quarters, Darena Hanover wasn’t nearly as strong as she appeared. In the stretch, Dube urged the 2-1 shot ($6.90) on and she scored very easily in 1:53 3/5. The victory pushed her to 200 points for the five legs and that gave her a ½ point advantage over Royal Cee Cee N, a mare that didn’t start in the last preliminary.

Keepers Destiny rallied for the place spot with Darena Hanover settling for third.

Earlier divisions proved more like prep races, as Ramalama roared out of the pocket to score by a head over likely final favorite Anndrovette in a 1:53 1/5 mile. The winner would have enough points to reach the final had she raced from any stable other than that of Ron Burke. Anndrovette saved ground through much of the way, found an opening in the passing lane and charged home strongly. The winner returned $5.80.

The fastest preliminary leg of the night was taken by Feeling You and Tyler Buter in 1:52 3/5. The three-leg winner had already secured a position in the final before the victory. Feeling You outkicked a determined Handsoffmycookie with original third place finisher Krispy Apple breaking near the wire and being set back to fourth behind Rocklamation. The latter mare will join stablemate Camille in the final if both choose to enter. Each stable may only enter two horses in the final.
