Yonkers: Action-packed Levy produces interesting results

Mike Lizzi
Rockincam (2) and Classic Rock Nroll (5) finished in a dead-heat in the first division of the Levy.

The George Morton Levy series was in full force on Saturday night with leading drivers Brian Sears and Yannick Gingras contesting the five $50,000 preliminary events as if they were racing in the final. For Sears, guiding first-round winner Razzle Dazzle from post eight, the trip was as adventurous as it was contentious. For Gingras, driving the richest pacer of all time Foiled Again, it was an opportunity to get on the scoreboard after finishing second in round one action.

In the end it was none of the above, as Casimir Jitterbug, a 12-1 outsider, rallied on the outside in the stretch to overtake Code Word with Foiled Again getting third.

The race had more moves than one can imagine on a half-mile track, with Sapphire City outsprinting Foiled Again and Code Word into the first turn. Gingras settled Foiled Again briefly before jetting him to the front before the :27 4/5 opening quarter. In the meantime, Razzle Dazzle had left the gate to take a spot in fifth. But no sooner had Sears seen Gingras get the lead when he elected to pull his horse and make a wicked move towards the front. The pace picked up considerably with the half reached in :54 4/5 as Razzle Dazzle put a half-length in front of Foiled Again. Finally heading down the backstretch the final time, Razzle Dazzle secured the lead from his rival but all that did was prompt Sapphire City and Code Word to get into the outer tier and attack the leader. With a three quarter time of 1:23 1/5, Razzle Dazzle did his best to hold off the onslaught, but in early stretch he succumbed as first Sapphire City took the lead and then Code Word rallied past him. Eric Goodell was fortunate to lay far enough off the pace with Casimir Jitterbug and he timed his move just right to overtake Code Word on the wire in a 1:52 2/5 mile.

Casimir Jitterbug put a bookend on two victories for owner Frank Bellino and trainer Tony O’Sullivan. The other win came when Classic Rock Nroll finished in a dead-heat with Rockincam in the first division of the evening. In this one, Rockincam had control after a sharp quarter move and Goodell (driving for the opposition this time) cut all the fractions and appeared very comfortable with a two length lead in mid-stretch. But Classic Rock Nroll with Brian Sears roared out of the pocket late to gain the tie in the 1:51 4/5 mile. The dead heat was the second in consecutive night stakes action at Yonkers.

A miscue by favored Second Wind N on the second turn while he was clearing the lead paved the way for Electrofire, a 9-2 shot, to capture another $50,000 Levy division in 1:53 2/5 for Brian Sears.

Gingras and trainer Ron Burke enjoyed another big night capturing two Levy divisions. Something For Doc made it two straight as the 1-5 choice in his division with a 1:51 4/5 mile at the expense of 29-1 shot Listowel, who passed second choice Our Cullenscrown N late. Annieswesterncard also made it two straight for the driver-trainer tandem, scoring in the evening’s fastest mile of 1:51 3/5. The seven-year-old overcame post seven and easily held runner-up Shoobees Place at bay. Dancin Yankee finished third and first leg winner Versado had a rough journey from post eight and finished fourth.

The Levy series continues with third leg action on Saturday, April 6.
