X Y Jet to have surgery for knee chip

X Y Jet, shown training in Dubai, has a small chip in his left knee.

X Y Jet came out of Saturday’s second-place finish in the Dubai Golden Shaheen with a small chip in his left knee, according to trainer Jorge Navarro.

“He never took a bad step but came back from the race with some heat in the knee, and we discovered a small flake upon taking an X-ray,” said Navarro. “He’ll go to Kentucky for surgery and should be able to be back sometime this summer and still make it to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.”

X Y Jet had won five straight races, including a pair of Grade 3 stakes at Gulfstream Park, before losing by a neck to Muarrab in the six-furlong Golden Shaheen. A majority interest in X Y Jet was purchased by Rockingham Ranch from Gelfenstein Farm last winter.

Navarro said he was uncertain whether X Y Jet will return to his barn or be sent to Peter Miller, who trains for Rockingham Ranch in Southern California, when the horse is ready to resume training.

“Whatever they decide is fine with me,” said Navarro. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity they gave me to take the horse to Dubai.”
