Wrenice sharp in return from long layoff

Wrenice has turned in some of her best races at Retama Park. Last year, she was a 17-length allowance winner at the track. In the meet's first stakes Saturday night, she rolled to a 1 1/2-length in the $45,000 Lakeway. The race was her first since April.

Wrenice ($2.60) overtook early leader Lunarlady after an opening quarter in 22.60 seconds in the Lakeway, then steadily increased her advantage to the wire. She covered the six furlongs for 3-year-old fillies in 1:09.70. Tear Jerker finished second, 2 3/4 lengths in front of Lunarlady. Bobby Walker Jr. rode Wrenice for trainer Randy Mayfield.

The Lakeway was the seventh career stakes win for Wrenice, who has now won 8 of 12 starts and $386,346. She races for her breeder, Stewart Hamblen.
