Woodman, sire of Hansel, dead

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Irish champion and sire Woodman, whose best sons include champions Hansel and Timber Country, has been euthanized at Ashford Stud at age 24, the Versailles, Ky., farm announced Friday.

The Mr. Prospector horse was put down Thursday due to the infirmities of old age, according to the announcement.

Ashford is the Kentucky division of Irish-based Coolmore Stud. The farm statement said that the stallion has more than 40 mares in foal from the 2007 breeding season. Woodman stood for $20,000 this year.

Woodman, a son of the Buckpasser mare Playmate, was bred by the partnership of Warner Jones Jr. and Ed A. Cox Jr. A $3 million yearling, he went on to become champion juvenile in Ireland in 1985 after his victories in that season's Anglesey and Futurity stakes, both Group 3 events. He went on the following year to finish third in Ireland's Mill Ridge Stakes, ultimately winning 3 of his 4 starts and earning $28,045.

At stud, Woodman got a pair of champions and classic winners from his early crops. Hansel won the 1991 Preakness and Belmont en route to the 3-year-old male title that year, and Timber Country won the 1994 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Champagne Stakes to earn the 2-year-old championship, then won the following year's Preakness.

Woodman's best runners include Bosra Sham, a European champion and winner of the Group 1 1000 Guineas in 1996; Hishi Akebono, a two-time Japanese champion; Canadian champion 3-year-old Woodcarver; European champion Gay Gallanta; French champion and classic winner Hector Protector; English and Irish champion Hawk Wing; English champion Mujtahid; Grade 1 winners Mahogany Hall and Chiselling; and such Group 1 performers as Way of Light, Dr Johnson, and Ciro. From 18 crops to race, Woodman's progeny have earned $99,483,766 to date, according to the Jockey Club.

In recent years, Woodman has been recognized as a prominent broodmare sire and is ranked fifth this year on the broodmare sires list. His daughters include the dams of such Grade 1 or Group 1 winners as More Than Ready, Carry on Katie, Snow Ridge, Mamool, and Sutra.
