Woodlands: Tough field for $20K

Email

The purse of the $20,000 Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe Handicap at the Woodlands in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday belies the strength of the field. A competitive group of seven horses will line up for the six-furlong race, and together they have combined to win 71 races and earn more than $1.8 million.

The biggest contributor to such stats is Magic Doe, a winner of 16 races and $718,548. He will cut back to one turn Saturday after finishing fourth around two last out in a one-mile money allowance at Prairie Meadows. The last time he went from one mile to six furlongs, Magic Doe finished fourth in the $50,000 Prairie Meadows Sprint on Aug. 7 after finishing third in the $100,000 Omaha Handicap.

Jim McCoy trains Magic Doe and will also start Millennium Storm, who is shooting for his fourth straight win Saturday. Claimed for $25,000 in his last start, Millennium Storm won a 6 1/2-furlong claimer by more than 16 lengths Aug. 4 at Ellis Park.
