Woodlands: A sweep for McCoy?


Trainer Jim McCoy has leading contenders in both divisions of the Kansas Thoroughbred Futurity at the Woodlands on Sunday. He will start Scarlet Jeff, a six-length maiden winner over open company last out, in the colts and geldings division, and probable favorite Wind Twister in the fillies division. Wind Twister has won both of her starts, and last out defeated open company in a conditioned allowance at the Woodlands. She won her maiden at Arlington Park.

* Jockey Donnie Meche escaped serious injury in the first race Thursday night at Lone Star when he was thrown from his mount, Karroo, as she fell on the lead in the stretch run of the first race. He was transported to a local hospital and released and on Friday morning was named to ride several horse at Lone Star on Sunday.

* Michael Gill, the leading owner in North America and known for his aggressive claiming tactics, claimed four horses Thursday night at Lone Star. Gill has a division at the track this year, with the horses managed by Gammy Vazquez.

* First post for an 11-race card on Breeders' Cup Day at Louisiana Downs has been set for 12 p.m. Central. The track's closing program, on Oct. 31, will start at 12:30 p.m.
