Woodlands: Five stakes closing day


The Woodlands in Kansas City, Kan., will close out its meet with its richest card, as five stakes will be decided, led by the $20,000 Woodlands Juvenile for Thoroughbreds and the $100,000 estimated Kansas Jackpot Futurity for Quarter Horses.

Kelly Carson will take on males in the Juvenile, a six-furlong race that drew 12. She beat them in her last race, when she won the $10,000 Club House at Columbus over Slew Lucky, who returned in his next start to win an allowance. Kelly Carson is by Lord Carson, and her dam, Mips, was a two-time stakes winner who earned $200,404.

Trainer Joe Thomas has given the mount to Armando Martinez.

The other stakes winners in the field are Mr. Canyon Run, and Shelby Dee, who returns to racing against males after an eight-length triumph in the fillies division of the KTA Futurity.

In the Kansas Jackpot, which is a restricted Grade 2, Im Capt Morgan could go favored after setting the fastest qualifying time for the race when he won his 400-yard trial in 20.33 seconds. Richard Vasquez has the mount.

* The $20,000 Woodlands at 1 1/16 miles drew a number of capable older horses, including A R Crackers, a recent stakes winner; Subsequently, who has placed in stakes in his last two starts; and Bay of Love.

* Firstdown Goal to Go rates as a top contender in the Kansas Jackpot Derby for Quarter Horses.

* Frostys Money Man is the class of the field in the $15,000 Woodlands Championship for Quarter Horses.
