Woodbine: Wando's back

Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Wando ($4.20) overhauled I'm the Tiger in the final strides to take the $135,875 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine Saturday.

Wando and I'm the Tiger both stalked the pace in the six-furlong dash, as Soitenly set fractions of 22.69 seconds and 45.94 while being pressed by Mazengah. I'm the Tiger took control at the head of the stretch, and yielded grudgingly to Wando, who prevailed by a neck in 1:10.67. El Ruller finished another three lengths back in third in the seven-horse field of 3-year-olds.

"I had a great trip," said Todd Kabel, who rode Wando. "I was just a little disappointed in my horse, because he wasn't being too game [while running] in between horses. I had lots of room to move up in the middle of the turn, but he didn't want to do that, so I had to sit a little longer and let [I'm the Tiger] go by, and then he gave me a nice kick."

Wando, the winter-book favorite for the June 22 Queen's Plate, earned $81,525 for owner Gustav Schickedanz. He is trained by Mike Keogh.
