Woodbine: Verne's Baby wins duel

A determined Verne's Baby ($4.80) shrugged off several challenges on the front end en route to a narrow victory in Saturday's $162,000 Queenston Stakes at Woodbine.

Verne's Baby dueled with Olympia Fields through fractions of 23.15 and 46.20 seconds in the seven-furlong event for Ontario-foaled 3-year-olds. Moonshine Justice, the 7-5 favorite, and Enough Is Enough stalked the leaders, and Enough Is Enough came up inside Verne's Baby exiting the turn.

Verne's Baby and Enough Is Enough battled throughout the stretch, with Verne's Baby prevailing by a head in a final time of 1:23.40. Moonshine Justice was another three lengths back in third in the five-horse field, from which Ablo had been scratched.

"He's still very green, and is still learning the game," said Emile Ramsammy, who rode Verne's Baby for G.B. Stable and trainer Sid Attard.

Verne's Baby, who is now unbeaten in three starts, earned $97,200.
