Woodbine: Tusayan gets trip

Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tusayan ($12.70) came charging down the center of the course in the stretch to capture the $144,750 Bunty Lawless Stakes for Ontario-sired runners.

Jockey Emile Ramsammy had Tusayan near the back of the pack during the first six furlongs of the one-mile turf race. All Star Lover dueled with Starbeau, Mister Coop, and Don't Seven Out through fractions of 23.47 and 47.23 over a course labeled as good, and All Star Lover emerged with the lead in midstretch.

Tusayan commenced his rally early in the stretch, and kicked in strongly through the final furlong to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. All Star Lover held second by a nose over Spanish Decree, the lone filly in the 13-horse field, while favored Hot Pepper Hill was seventh. The final time was 1:38.90.

"[Tusayan] had a nice trip," said Ramsammy. "He was fanned wide at the top of the lane, and then punched in nicely."

Tusayan, one of just two 3-year-olds in the lineup, earned $86,250 for winning his third turf stakes of the meeting. He is owned by the partnership of trainer Laurie Silvera and Sriniva Kilambi.
