Woodbine: Tannery by a head in E.P. Taylor Stakes

Tannery (No. 10) and jockey Joel Rosario win the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes by a head over Fitful Skies.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The favored Tannery rallied stoutly under Joel Rosario to capture Sunday’s Grade 1, $502,800 E.P. Taylor Stakes, the supporting feature on Canadian International Day at Woodbine.

Tannery trailed the 10-horse field of fillies and mares on the backstretch of the 1 1/4-mile test, which was run over a soggy course labeled “yielding.” She began a four-wide rally on the far turn and then hit the front in midstretch before holding off the German shipper Fitful Skies to prevail by a head. The final time was 2:07.13.

Moment In Time, another European invader, checked in another two lengths back in third. She was followed by Minakshi, Samba Brazil, the fading pacemaker No Explaining, Irish Mission, Moment of Majesty, Colonial Flag, and Nancy O.

“I just let her be happy,” Rosario said. “I tried to save some ground. After that, I tried to make a little move early. She has a big kick, and we got the job done. That horse on the inside was fighting. It was a very exciting race. I’m so glad we won.”

Tannery ($6) collected $300,000 for owner Richard Santulli. The 4-year-old Irish-bred daughter of Dylan Thomas is based at Colts Neck Farm in New Jersey with trainer Alan Goldberg.
