Surtsey, ridden by Jermaine Bridgmohan, won the Ontario Damsel Stakes in her turf debut Sunday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Surtsey, a 41-1 outsider ridden by Jermaine Bridgmohan, rallied strongly to take the $150,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.

Surtsey ($84.10) stalked in third on the backstretch, then dropped to fourth on the turn, while Akron Moon set quick fractions in the one-mile turf route. Surtsey commenced a wide rally exiting the turn, then mowed down the leaders nearing the eighth pole before drawing clear for a 2 1/4-length tally in 1:33.80 over firm ground.

“She was coming out of sprints and broke real sharp,” Bridgmohan said. “It was her first time on the turf, and I just wanted her to relax and finish up, and boy did she ever.”

Trained by Kevin Attard, Surtsey earned $90,000 for owner Yvonne Schwabe, who bred the winner of last Sunday’s Queen’s Plate, Midnight Aria.

Adventure At Sea finished second at 11-1, and the favored Dance Again was a prominent third in the field of seven Ontario-breds.

Something noteworthy that Ron Geirkink should be writing about and the Provincial Government, the Ontario Racing Commission and most importantly the Betting Public should be alerted to. The constant changing of rules in regards betting Pick 4’s at Woodbine to the detriment of the betting public. We saw a strange ruling on Queen’s Plate day and another rip off last Saturday. On July 13, 2013 the 7th. Race at Woodbine for whatever strange reason; management saw fit to cancel just this one race out of a ten race program. This race is the fourth leg of the early pick 4 and the first leg of the late pick 4. The early pick 4 was paid out with an ALL at the end which is reasonable enough considering the strange circumstances However while most monies bet on race 7 was refunded, the late Pick 4 money was kept by Woodbine as a valid bet. One must ask how is it possible to bet a Pick 4 when the race was cancelled and there were only 3 races left. However instead of the bettors given a refund so they can bet a Pick 3, Woodbine kept the monies wagered and once again used the now famous ALL with 3-4/8/13 as a Pick 4 pay out of 290.85. In the meantime those lucky enough to bet the Pick 3 collected 427.15. # 13 Go Wes Go trained by John Leblanc Jr. and owned by Ron Geirkink paid $29.60 to win in the final leg of an illegal Pick 4 at Woodbine on Saturday July 13, 2013.
