Woodbine: Star Shoot upset

Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Winter Garden held off a stern stretch bid from 2-5 favorite Hour of Justice to post an upset in Saturday's $143,500 at Woodbine.

Chantal Sutherland rode Winter Garden, who battled up front with Deputy Cures Blues through wind-aided splits of 21.93 and 44.31 seconds in the six-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies.

Hour of Justice raced in tight quarters on the turn while stalking the pace, and came wide into the lane. She appeared to have Winter Garden measured in midstretch, but Winter Garden prevailed by a half-length.

Buffalo Jump, Deputy Cures Blues, Handpainted, and In the Ghetto completed the order of finish. The final time, over a very quick track, was 1:09.04.

Winter Garden ($26.40) earned $81,000 in her first stakes win. It was the third win on the card for trainer Bob Tiller, who purchased Winter Garden for $30,000 as a yearling for owner Frank DiGiulio Jr.

"The race came up awfully tough, and I didn't think we could win it," Tiller said. "I just told Chantal to let her run her own race, and she kept going."
