Skylander Girl, under Jim McAleney, wins the My Dear.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sky Commander, a 24-1 outsider trained by Mark Casse, won Saturday’s $129,800 Charlie Barley Stakes at Woodbine after the disqualification of Golden Sabre.

Golden Sabre rallied outside from sixth to get home on top by a half-length in the one-mile turf event, but he drifted in late and interfered with Kid Dreams. Following an inquiry and a jockey’s objection, he was placed behind that rival in fourth. Favored Clearly Now inherited second, and Kid Dreams got third in the 10-horse field of 3-year-olds.

Over a course labeled good, the final time was 1:34.35.

Justin Stein rode Sky Commander, who had clear sailing closing along the inside. He earned $75,000 in his first stakes score for owner John Oxley.

My Dear: Skylander Girl upsets

Skylander Girl ($24.10) graduated fairly easily second time out in the last of three stakes on Saturday, in the $168,000 My Dear for 2-year-old fillies.

Skylander Girl prevailed by three lengths under Jim McAleney. She covered the five furlongs in 58.24 seconds and banked $108,000 in her first start for owner/trainer Alex Patykewich.

“We had wonderful trip,” said McAleney. “This filly settled really well in behind the pace. I had a lot of confidence in her. I was hoping she’d pick it up and finish the way I expected her to, and she did. She’s very professional.”

Alovelybunch barely held off 4-5 favorite Sky America for second in the eight-horse field.
