ETOBICOKE, Ontario—Silent Serenity notched her first stakes in a huge upset in the $102,200 Ruling Angel, the first of two stakes on the Saturday card at Woodbine.
On a clear lead, Silent Serenity ($75.20) set honest splits of 22.58 and 45.20 seconds in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint, before holding on for a three-quarter-length tally over Swift Artist. Evil Kitten rallied for third, while favored To Endue Wei faded to seventh in the eight-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.
The Ruling Angel was the first victory for trainer Reni co Plafond, who gave Jesse Campbell a leg up on the Trinity Racing Stable-owned Silent Serenity.
“She broke really sharp, and I hustled her,” said Campbell. “I didn’t think I could out-kick those horses, so I wanted to get as much daylight as I could between me and [them] and just try to hold on. We did that.”
* Surtsey ($14.40) rallied four-wide under Jermaine Bridgmohan to capture the $150,000 Fanfreluche Stakes by a length over Rootham Triple E’s. Trained by Kevin Attard, Surtsey covered six furlongs in 1:10.52 in the race for Ontario-bred 2-year-old fillies.

LOVE TO RUN was rarin' to go first out in two months, so much so that he rocketed through a six-furlong split of 1:08.79 seconds - faster than Cross Traffic in the Westchester at the same one-mile distance a few days earlier; back-to-back Belmont wins last year included one rallying from next-to-last, so he may make good use of outside draw to track COLIZEO. The latter drops to same second-level condition where he won big first off R-Rod claim; reunited with Jose Ortiz, who was aboard for that score on wet track.
