Signature Red holds off favored Fiddlers Patriot to win the Grade 2 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Signature Red captured the Grade 2, $201,200 Highlander Stakes for the second year in a row on the Queen’s Plate undercard at Woodbine on Sunday.

After a stalking trip under Luis Contreras, Signature Red held off favored Fiddlers Patriot in the final strides to win the six-furlong turf dash by a nose, in a time of 1:09. Heros Reward held on for third, after racing in tight quarters in the stretch under Sheldon Russell.

Both trainer Dale Capuano and Russell lodged a claim of foul against Signature Red for interference, but there was no change in the order of finish after a stewards’ inquiry.

Signature Red ($15.60) earned $120,000 for Norseman Racing Stable and trainer Sid Attard. He had gone winless since last year’s Highlander, but was in good Polytrack form leading up to Sunday’s engagement.

“This horse is much better on the grass,” Attard stressed. “With his class, he always runs good on the Poly, but he’s a turf horse, really.”
